  1. One method that has been suggested to use with the quickly growing population of LEP students is to have language translating software available for them to use in the classroom. Also, it is suggested that teachers use hand gestures and pictures as much as possible. These are some methods that should benefit the students in the classroom.

  2. I have found that by having the students actively participate in class and by using electronic devices such as the mimio, the children are much more engaged in the lesson. This leads to better understanding through practice and excitement for the LEP students, which in turn leads to a better educational experience. I have also found that hands on activities that involve pictures can be helpful to these students as well.

  3. I have found that the LEP students have a lot more success in the classroom when they are receiving support at home. Open communication and tools made available to the Spanish speaking parents is very important because they want to be involved in their child's education process. The parents can be a big help. At my school we have books, etc. in Spanish that the parents can use with their child. Also, we have Spanish speaking aids who help us to communicate with the parents.

  4. I have found through extensive research that the more the LEP students are forced to use the English language the more familiar with the vocabulary they become. This results in them better understanding the concepts taught in class. This can best be reinforced by having all of the teachers in all subjects have them write in full sentences. For example in Math the students can answer questions in full sentences at times with word problems or worksheet activities.

  5. I am finding that my co-workers are finding that the LEP students mainly struggle with their vocabulary due to the language barrier. Many of my co-workers are providing these students with a translator in the classroom that can aid them when they get stuck. Also flashcards are very beneficial to these students because they provide a picture of the item along with the word.

  6. I have found that when it comes to math and LEP students an example accompaning the directions is necessary due to the language barrier. For example the students can find GCF once they realize what they are being asked for using the language they know. Illustrations of fractions are also very helpful when subtracting fractions because of the visual aid.

  7. I have found that it should really be encouraged that students answer in full sentences whenever possible in all of their subject areas. This can really help them to incorporate the proper verbal and written language into their daily life. This is especially beneficial to LEP students trying to learn the language. All subjects can do this, even math. Math could incorporate explain questions.

  8. One situation that my campus runs into with our LEP students is that this is the first year some of them will take the TAKS test in English. This can cause some difficulty for them and cause some to not perform to their full abilities due to the language barrier. One item that helps our LEP students overcome this is to have them practice seeing similar problems in English. This gets them used to the types of words that will be used and what they mean before the stress of the test is added.
